Sheffield Wednesday to offer Sunderland star a Championship lifeline

Sheffield Wednesday are leading the race to sign Sunderland midfielder George Honeyman, according to the Chronicle.

The Black Cats have been relegated to League One and are looking to offload a number of players this summer to help reduce their high wage bill.

Midfielder George Honeyman is one who could be heading for the exit door at the Stadium of Light over the coming months. Championship side Sheffield Wednesday are being linked with a move for him.

The Owls, who are managed by Jos Luhukay, have had a poor season and will be looking to improve in the next campaign. They will be looking for a number of players to sign to improve their squad and may see Honeyman as someone who would bolster their attacking options.

The 23-year-old has broken into the first-team of Sunderland this season and has been a first-team regular for them. However, he has not been able to prevent them from slipping into the third tier but may have done enough to stay in the Championship himself in the next campaign.

Honeyman joined the Sunderland academy at the age of 10 and rose through the youth ranks with the North-East club. He made his debut in February 2015 against Bradford City in the FA Cup. He also scored his first league goal for the Black Cats against Sheffield Wednesday in August 2017.

George Honeyman is still only 23 and would be a shrewd signing by Sheffield Wednesday.
