Sheffield United boss emerges as candidate for the Sunderland job

Sheffield United manager Chris Wilder has emerged as a candidate for the Sunderland job. He is 2nd favourite on SkyBet priced at 9/4.

The Black Cats are in the hunt for a new manager after they sacked Chris Coleman following their relegation to League One. Former Ipswich Town boss Mick McCarthy is the favourite and names such as Jaap Stam and Mark Warburton have also been mentioned.

Chris Wilder is a shock candidate. He is currently manager of his boyhood club Sheffield United and has done an impressive job with the Blades.

The 50-year-old took charge of the Bramhall Lane club at the start of last season and guided them to the League One title. He has then this season had them competing in the top half of the Championship. They were in the Play-Offs for a lot of early campaign but their form deteriorated.

Wilder played for Sheffield United as a player as well as having spells at Rotherham United, Notts County, Bradford City and Brighton and Hove Albion. He started his managerial career at Alfreton Town for a season before he left them for Halifax Town in 2002.

He spent 6 years at Halifax before joining Oxford United after a brief coaching stint at Bury in 2008. He guided them to promotion to the Football League in 2010 and went on to manage Northampton Town before joining the Blades.

Chris Wilder has had a successful managerial career so far but it would be hard to see him leave Sheffield United for Sunderland.
