Championship – ramifications of Saturday’s results

Cardiff City put their midweek defeat to Derby County behind them to climb back into the automatic promotion places.

Neil Warnock’s side were comfortable winners in Yorkshire as they visited Hull. A brace from centre-half Sean Morrison saw Cardiff overtake Fulham once more.

The Cottagers had piled the pressure on the Bluebirds last night after picking up another victory, stretching their unbeaten run to 23 matches. A 2-1 win over already relegated Sunderland saw Fulham only temporarily heading to 2nd spot in the Sky Bet Championship.

Staying with the play-off picture, Derby County were able to gain a respectable point on the road at fellow top six side Aston Villa. Cameron Jerome put the Rams ahead with his third in two games but Lewis Grabban scored yet another goal to savor a point.

Middlesbrough were able to fend off Millwall in a crucial game up at the Riverside. An early Britt Assombalonga set the tone with Jonny Howson adding a second to secure all three points.

Just outside the top six, Preston extinguished Sheffield United’s hopes of a top six finish after a 1-0 win over the Blades at Bramall Lane. Alan Browne slid in at the back post to win all the points.

It was more of a day for the bottom table in the Sky Bet Championship. Burton Albion continued their quest to stay in the division once more with a win over Bolton Wanderers. A Hope Akpan goal and a Lucas Akins strike saw Burton climb above their opponents. The Brewers are now only in the bottom three on goal difference.

With Burton winning, it was crucial for Barnsley to also pick up maximum points. Keiffer Moore got them off to the perfect start against play-off chasing Brentford. On-loan Swansea striker Oli McBurnie added a second to confirm the points. This result ensures that the drama will continue onto the final day.

Both Reading and Birmingham City could still be dragged down to Sky Bet League One after the pair both lost today. The Royals were thumped at home by Ipswich by four goals to nil.  Whereas Birmingham tasted defeat in the capital at QPR, depsite taking the lead through Che Adams.

Both Norwich City and Leeds United have nothing to play for this season but it would be the Canaries that would take all the points at Carrow Road. On a special day for Wes Hoolahan, he got the home side back on level terms after Calvin Phillips had put Leeds ahead. The impressive Josh Murphy scored the winner to top off a memorable day for Irishman Hoolahan.

Bristol City’s play-off push was ended today after a goaless draw with Nottingham Forest at the City Ground. Despite Lee Tomlin missing a penalty against his former side, the Robins slipped further away from the top six.

Title winners Wolves enjoyed a sell out against aN under performing Sheffield Wednesday side. Despite Wolves not winning the game, Nuno’s men were able to enjoy the trophy celebrations after the game.
