Bolton boss criticises undefendable peformance

Bolton Wanderers moved one step closer to relegation on Saturday after defeat to fellow relegation rivals Burton Albion at the Pirelli Stadium.

It was a performance from Wanderers that prompted manager Phil Parkinson to apologise to the Trotters travelling contingent.

First half goals from Hope Akpan and Lucas Akins secured victory for the Brewers, and saw the home side leapfrog their opponents in the process.

Speaking to the club website, Parkinson said “I can only apologise to our travelling supporters today because that wasn’t good enough.

“We didn’t offer anything. I’ve stood here several times and defended performances, but I can’t today.

“The first goal was a very simple goal and it gave them the lead. For the second goal, we haven’t cleared our lines from a set play and reacted to the second phase situations.”

Bolton gained promotion back to the Championship last season after finishing runners up, only second to Sheffield United.

However, it now seems that it will be an instant return to the third tier for Parkinson’s men as they are one point adrift of safety, with just one game left to play.

“Let’s be honest, when was the last time someone produced a real moment of quality to get us back into a game or to win us a game of football? That’s what you need.” Parkinson added.

“I’ve got to pick myself up and pick a team that is ready to run through brick walls next week.”

Bolton host Nottingham Forest at the Macron Stadium next week where only a win will do for the Trotters, and they will have to hope results favour them across the league.

“There’s a chance because the other teams have got difficult games, but we’ve got to give ourselves a chance by winning against Forest.

“If we are to go down next week, then we’ve got to go down fighting, a lot more than we did today.”
