Sol Campbell on shortlist for vacant Championship job

Sol Campbell is on the shortlist for the Ipswich Town job, according to ESPN.

The 43-year-old is keen to get into management and will be considered by Ipswich Town. He had expressed an interest in the Oxford United job last month but they opted to go for Karl Robinson instead.

Ipswich are in the hunt for a new manager for next season after Mick McCarthy left the club after five years at the helm at Portman Road. Managers such as Lincoln City’s Danny Cowley, Blackburn Rovers boss Tony Mowbray, VVV-Venlo’s Maurice Steijn as well as former Premier League legends Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard have been linked with the vacant position.

Sol Campbell is the new name that has been thrown into the hat. His only previous coaching/managerial experience came when he was the assistant manager of the Trinidad and Tobago national team last year.

Campbell enjoyed a successful playing career though and racked up 73 England Caps. He had spells at Tottenham Hotspur, Arsenal, Portsmouth, Notts County and Newcastle United as a commanding centre-half.

Ipswich Town is an attractive job in the Championship and there will no doubt be plenty of managers interested in it. It will be interesting to see who they opt for. If they want a young and hungry manager with a point to prove, then Sol Campbell may be ideal for them.
