Leeds United poised to complete deal for Nigerian striker this summer

Leeds United are poised to complete a deal to sign Carpi striker Jerry Mbakogu in the summer, according to Football Insider.

The report suggests that the Nigerian has been granted Italian citizenship which will make the proposed deal easier to finalise.

Championship side Leeds United have apparently agreed a deal in principle for the 25-year-old for around £4 million and the transfer is on the table to be concluded in the summer.

He has scored 8 goals in the Italian Serie B this season for Carpi. He can also operate as a winger and is a player who will bolster Leeds United’s attacking options for next season. The Whites’ boss, Paul Heckingbottom, will be looking to add some fresh faces to his newly inherited squad over the coming months.

Mbakogu is a deal that has been bubbling away for Leeds United and it appears likely that he will be on his way to Elland Road. He has played for Carpi since 2014.

He started his career in Italy with Padova but only ever played once for them in Serie B. He was shipped out on loan for three seasons at Juve Stabia as a youngster before he moved to Carpi in 2014, initially on loan but was made permanent.

The powerful striker has scored 28 goals all together for Carpi in 92 games. His goal scoring form earned him a loan move to Krylia Sovetov last season, but he struggled to make an impact in the Russian Premier League and returned to Carpi in January 2017. It will be interesting to see how he adapts to life in the Championship, should his move to Leeds go through.
