Carlisle United, Ex-Östersunds, Limerick and Blackpool boss odds-on favourite for Carlisle United job

Ex-Östersunds, Limerick and Blackpool boss odds-on favourite for Carlisle United job

Neil McDonald is the 1/4 favourite for the Carlisle United job on SkyBet.

The League Two side are in the hunt for a new manager as their current boss, Keith Curle, is leaving at the end of the season. McDonald is the early front-runner and leads the way ahead of Lee Clark, Graham Alexander, Matt Jansen and Clint Hill.

McDonald has managed Carlisle United before in the 2007/08 season and is being tipped for a return to Brunton Park this summer.

The 52-year-old had spells at Newcastle United, Everton, Oldham Athletic, Bolton Wanderers and Preston North End as a player. He started his coaching career with spells at Preston, Bolton Wanderers and Crystal Palace before getting his first managerial role at Carlisle in 2007.

However, he lasted just a year at Carlisle and joined Norwegian side Östersunds after his sacking and saved them from relegation before returning to England to have coaching spells at Lincoln City, Leeds United and Blackburn Rovers.

He has worked under Sam Allardyce at various clubs and followed him to West Ham United in 2010. He returned as a manager with Blackpool in League One but left them after a season after they were relegated. He then got back in the game as the assistant manager to Mike Phelan at Hull City in October 2016, but left the Tigers after three months.

McDonald was then appointed manager of Irish side Limerick in May last year, but left them after 9 months to become the assistant manager at Scunthorpe United. He is obviously a well travelled coach and has lots of contacts in the game. It will be interesting to see if he gets the Carlisle job.
