Aston Villa defender in line to return ahead of Derby clash

Aston Villa captain John Terry could make a return to the side ahead of their crucial promotion clash with Derby County on Saturday.

Derby travel to the Midlands on Saturday knowing that a win against Villa can see them secure a Playoff spot with one game to go, but only if results go in their favour.

For Derby to consolidate their Playoff place, the Rams would have to win and hope that Brentford and Millwall fail to claim maximum points in their respective games.

Aston Villa are still fighting for that last automatic promotion spot, and only a win will do for Steve Bruce’s men. They will be boosted by the return of their 37-year-old captain.

Terry has missed the last three Villa games after sustaining an ankle injury. Despite returning to training at Bodymoor Heath last week, the former Chelsea man was not risked at Portman Road at the weekend as Villa smashed Ipswich 4-0.

The return of Terry can only be a plus for the Villains ahead of this crucial encounter.

Speaking to the Express and Star, Aston Villa assistant Colin Calderwood said “John had two or three days’ training,”

“He could have played (against Ipswich) but we can give him more training which will help toward the game next week.”

The Centre back has had his fair share of injuries this season, which have restricted the captain to just 28 appearances in Claret and Blue. He has scored a solitary goal against Fulham in October.

Terry’s experience and know-how will be vital to Bruce’s side in the promotion run in, and in the Playoffs if Villa fail to gain second spot.
