Oldham Athletic’s youth product puts pen to paper on his first professional contract

Oldham Athletic youngster Tom Hamer has today signed his first professional contract with Latics.

The defender has come though the club’s youth system and has put pen to paper on a two-year deal, which is fully deserved.

Richie Wellens has shown his faith in the 18-year-old as he gave him is first team debut in the Checkatrade Trophy against Premier League Leicester City’s Under 23’s.

Hamer was thrown in at the deep end for his first league start, following injuries to Cameron Dummigan and Kean Bryan and a suspension for Wilfried Moimbe, which meant that Hamer was called upon.

His first league start was against local rivals Rochdale in a relegation six-pointer with around 3,000 Latics supporting. Under this pressure, Hamer produced an excellent performer and was a key reason Oldham managed to keep a clean sheet.

Last weekend, Hamer provided an assist for inform Duckens Nazon for his first goal of the game against AFC Wimbledon.

Hamer told the club website: “I’m delighted to sign my first professional contract. It’s a proud moment for myself and my family.”

“I’m now looking forward to working hard between now, the rest of the season and beyond to ensure we maintain our League One status.”

Hamer certainly has a very bright future in the game and his next test will be against Southend United, a game in which Owner Abdallah Lemsagam is urging fans to support their club.

Abdallah Lemsagam said: “We really need the support from our fans tonight in what is a big game for the club.”

“We need the fans to recreate the atmospheres from recent away games and be the 12th man this evening.”

“I know how much it means to supporters and I share that passion as well. Nothing makes me prouder to see the fans give the team a lift and see the celebrations when we score.”
