Birmingham City take young goalkeeper on trial

Birmingham City have taken Latvian goalkeeper Rihards Matrevics on trial, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The nineteen year old stands at 6ft 7ins and is currently contracted to West Ham, however his contract at the London Stadium expires this summer.

Matrevics played in Blues’ U23 game against Bolton last friday, before appearing in Monday’s draw with Crystal Palace.

The goalkeeper joined the Hammers in 2015, and has been ever present in their development sides, as well as being capped regularly for Latvia’s U17’s and U19’s. He quickly established himself as the first choice for the young Hammers when he joined.

The Latvian started the opening six U18 Premier League fixtures of the season and has played for the club’s Under 23s too.

However, chances for the big shot stopper at U23 level have been restricted this campaign due to direct competition from Nathan Trott. The England U20 international has been in fine form and has kept Matrevics out of the side.

The Blues have both David Stockdale and Tomasz Kuszczak on the books at St Andrews, as well as youngster Connal Trueman.  With competitions for a place in goal rife, it is likely that if Matrevics does sign, he will go straight into the academy squad.

Despite just being 19 years old, his imposing frame makes him an intimidating keeper between the sticks and would be a welcome acquisition for the Blues development side. Matrevics would join Birmingham in the hope of pushing into the first team during the upcoming seasons.
