Henderson, Stoke City watching Shrews on loan Manchester United stopper

Stoke City watching Shrews on loan Manchester United stopper

According to Twitter account ‘Scouts in Attendance‘ (tweet – below), Premier League side Stoke City have been keeping tabs on Shrewsbury Town’s on-loan Manchester United stopper Dean Henderson.

21-year-old Henderson is seen as the fifth-choice stopper on the books at Manchester United, a line headed by current #1 David De Gea and with the likes of Sam Johnstone in front of him in the pecking order as well.

Whitehaven-born Henderson, who progressed through the youth ranks at Old Trafford after arriving from Carlisle United in 2011, has been on a season-long loan at League One side Shrewsbury and has featured in 34 games for them, conceding just 28 times and keeping an impressive 13 clean sheets.

As well as featuring for the Shrews, stopper Henderson has had loan deals out at Stockport in January-February 2016 (one FA Cup game on bench vs Manchester United) and Grimsby Town August 2016-February 2017 (seven games/five conceded/four clean sheets). Whilst at Shrewsbury he has courted some controversy after receiving a three-game ban for throwing objects at Blackburn Rovers fans at Ewood Park.

With him being so far down the pecking order at Old Trafford, Henderson’s future likely lies away from the club. However, Stoke’s interest would be strange considering he is untested at Premier League level and that Stoke have a current #1 in Jack Butland.
