Match Report: Wigan vs Oldham Athletic

Oldham Athletic suffered a blow in their battle to avoid the drop after they were comfortably beaten by Wigan at the DW Stadium, putting them back to top of League One.

Paul Cook made two changes to the team that beat Bury last weekend, with captain Samy Morsy returning in place of Jay Fulton and Grigg starting instead of Vaughan.

Manager Richie Wellens made two changes to the side which lost 0-2 at home to Portsmouth two weeks ago.

Rob Hunt came in for the injured Cameron Dummigan whilst Ben Pringle returned to the starting 11 in place of Ryan McLaughlin.

Both goalkeepers made saves in the early stages of the game, with Johny Placide needed to keep out Powell, before Eoin Doyle was denied by Christian Walton at the other end.

Placide was proving to be busy, as he tipped a shot from Grigg around the post, before the Wigan striker then missed a golden opportunity from six yards out when he should have done better.

Eoin Doyle then wasted a golden opportunity for the visitors 10 minutes before the break when he got the better of the home defence to race through on goal only to send a tame shot at Walton.

It looked like it would be goalless at the break, but Grigg made amends for his earlier miss when he scored to make it 1-0 to the hosts.

He got on the end of a pass from Powell, before slotting the ball past Placide from close range to give his side the lead at half-time (1-0).

Half Time – Wigan (Grigg 40′) 1-0 Oldham Athletic

Wigan Athletic made a change at the half time break as Vaughan replaced goalscorer Will Grigg and he made an immediate impact as he doubled their lead on 49 minutes.

A mix up at the back allowed Vaughan the opportunity to shoot and he put the ball beyond Placide to extend Wigan’s lead (2-0).

Latics felt they should have been awarded a penalty minutes later as Wilfried Moimbe advanced into the penalty area and shot but the referee waved away the protests.

Richie Wellens turned to his substitute’s bench to try and get his side back in the game, bringing on Patrick McEleney and Aaron Holloway in place of Pringle and Craig Davies.

Doyle’s back post volley was excellently blocked by Callum Elder on the hour after some good play from visiting substitute Patrick McEleney down the left.

The changes didn’t work for Oldham though, as Wigan put the finishing touches on their victory when they got their third goal on 66 minutes. It was a good individual goal from Powell, who cut inside and fired a powerful effort into the bottom corner (3-0).

Oldham pushed forward late on to try and get a consolation goal, but it wasn’t to be, with the team condemned to a 3-0 defeat at the DW Stadium.
