Luhukay pleased with committed Sheffield Wednesday

Sheffield Wednesday boss Jos Luhukay has hailed the efforts of his players after The Owls beat Preston North End 4-1 at Hillsborough in the Sky Bet Championship.

Atdhe Nuhiu netted a brace while there were also goals for Lucas Joao and Fernando Forestieri in a superb second half showing from Luhukay’s side.

Speaking to The72 after the match, The Owls boss admitted that he was pleased with the result for both the effort shown by his players and the club’s fans.

Luhukay said “I am delighted with the result but more for my team, my players and our fans. It was a superb atmosphere here today.

“I think our fans go home happy and my team have built a little bit more confidence.”

The match saw three attacking players get their names on the scoresheet which was another positive aspect for Luhukay.

“The strikers scoring goals make the difference in these games” added the Wednesday boss.

“Today we had that, Atdhe got the first goal, Lucas with his head and the third and fourth goals are what the fans come to the stadium to see.

“I think the players are very happy but for me, our fans are seeing a team who are fighting, working hard and giving 100% for each other.”

Despite scoring four goals, Wednesday were second best in a first half which produced few chances for either side and Luhukay believes that there is still plenty to work on.

“We must not forget the first half” Luhukay said. “We had a lot of problems in the game.

Preston are technically one of the best sides in the division and we had a lot of problems to solve to get control of the game.

“In the second half, Lucas came on and that was the key to becoming more offensive.

The win leaves Sheffield Wednesday 11 points above the relegation zone and Luhukay has clarified that the club have never looked at the situation as one which could have seen them battle relegation.

“It is more for the media” said The Owls boss. “We have never spoken about relegation.

“We concentrate on ourselves, only on the next game and we know what we must do better.

“The mentality of the team is very good, we don’t get too disappointed when we lose and we don’t get too excited when we win.

“I was not afraid of dropping out of the league and I believe in my players.”

Sheffield Wednesday are back in action on Monday when they travel to Wearside to take on Sunderland.
