Possible shock Ireland call-up for in-form Middlesbrough forward

Middlesbrough striker Patrick Bamford has scored eight goals in his last six games, and his form has got Republic of Ireland manager Martin O’Neill considering a possible call-up to the squad.

Bamford has represented Ireland at under-18 level, but has also represented England in multiple age groups. He is eligible to play for either side, but with extremely gifted forwards in the England set-up, if Bamford was to represent an international team, Ireland would certainly be more achievable.

The 24-year old has been revitalised since being moved into a central striker role. The majority of his appearances this season had came in a wide-left role. But, since Tony Pulis decided to deploy the former-Chelsea forward as a number nine, he hasn’t looked back.

Eight goals in five games, including two at Sunderland and a hat-trick against Leeds United has seen Middlesbrough cement a strong play-off position going into the latter stage of the season. Middlesbrough sit in sixth place, with nine regular-season fixtures left to play.

His scintillating form of late has put Martin O’Neill on red alert. He admitted in an interview with the Irish Mirror that he is closely monitoring Bamford. He is amongst several other players who could switch allegiances to play for ‘The Boys in Green’, including Callum Wilson and Lukas Jutkiewicz.

Back in 2015, Bamford told TalkSport that he wouldn’t rule out playing for the Republic of Ireland in the future. But he has also expressed his desire to play for England in the past too.

In an interview with The Evening Gazette, Bamford said, “I’d love to be called up for England. That’s the pinnacle of someone’s career to play for the national team. But of course, I’ve got a lot of work to do before that.”

If he keeps up his good form, who knows what could happen in the future for the Middlesbrough man.
