Sheffield Wednesday midfielder leaves to join Los Angeles FC

Sheffield Wednesday midfielder James Murphy has signed for Los Angeles FC, according to their official website.

The move for the 20 year-old has been granted international clearance and he has joined Los Angeles who will make their Major League Soccer (MLS) debut on Sunday against Seattle Sounders.

Murphy has been a regular for Sheffield Wednesday’s development squad over the past couple of seasons but never made an appearance for their first-team in the league. He has moved to Los Angeles with the hope of getting more game-time.

The central midfielder was born in New Jersey in the United States but after a trial with Philadelphia Union in 2015 he moved to England and signed for Sheffield Wednesday. He has since only played once for the Owls, and this came in a League Cup tie against Cambridge United in August 2016.

Murphy has caught the eye playing for USA’s U20s and is being tipped as a future senior international for them. His move back to his home country will certainly help that cause.

It is a blow for Sheffield Wednesday that they are losing him but a move to Los Angeles and to become part of their new exciting plans is an offer that Murphy could not turn down.

The MLS are bracing themselves for the debut of Los Angeles FC on Sunday. They are managed by former Swansea City boss Bob Bradley and have signed Carlos Vela from Real Sociedad. It will be interesting to see how they do in their first season.
