Swansea City boss praises former side in FA Cup defeat

Swansea City boss Carlos Carvalhal praised his former side Sheffield Wednesday as the Swans progressed in the Emirates FA Cup.

The Swans scraped past Wednesday in order to reach the quarter-finals for the first time since 1964. Goals from substitute Jordan Ayew and Nathan Dyer sealed progression to the next round, however it could have been a different story as the Owls gave a spirited fight.

Sheffield Wednesday created problems for us in the first game and also tonight,” Carvalhal said to the Club website.

“But I thought we had more opportunities in this game. We needed a bit more intensity and a bit more speed in the second half, and that’s why we put Jordan and Martin Olsson on at half-time.

“We felt after a couple of minutes that we could score and we did that.

Sheffield Wednesday reacted well. They put three attackers on and played some long balls, but we defended very well.

“Then we got the second goal because they were opening up some spaces and after that we closed the doors and the windows to finish the game.”

Now that the Owls have exited the Emirates FA Cup, they will be able to focus their attentions on surviving relegation from the Sky Bet Championship.

Having reached the heights of almost being promoted to the Premier League last season, many Owls fans will see this season as a disappointment. The Yorkshire club are propped up in 17th-place, seven points above the relegation zone, however Owls boss Jos Luhukay will be keen to propel his side further up the League standings.
