Grimsby Town, Grimsby Town invite former England defender to apply for vacancy

Grimsby Town invite former England defender to apply for vacancy

Sky Bet League Two club Grimsby Town are understood to be keen to hear from former England international centre-back Sol Campbell about their managerial vacancy according to BBC Sport.

The Mariners are currently searching for a new manager after sacking former boss Russell Slade earlier this month following a 12-match winless run.

Grimsby Town are believed to have received plenty of interest in their managerial vacancy from experienced managers in the game however the club are believed to have invited former England defender Campbell to contact them about the role.

The 43-year-old retired from playing five-and-a-half years ago and recently gained managerial experience as an assistant with the Trinidad and Tobago national team. Campbell is still waiting for an opportunity in English football management and was recently unsuccessful in applying for the managerial vacancy at Sky Bet League One club Oxford United.

Campbell enjoyed a playing career in which he appeared at FIFA World Cups and European Championships for England while he made close to 400 appearances for Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal combined. The defender won the English Premier League title on two occasions throughout his career while he also won both domestic cups.

With Grimsby Town looking to push themselves up the league table, Campbell would bring bags of experience with him to Blundell Park while his stature would surely boost attendances at the club.
