Wellens calls for urgency from his Oldham Athletic squad

Oldham Athletic manager Richie Wellens is urging his team to only focus on themselves heading into the final months of the season.

Latics picked up a crucial three points after beating fellow strugglers MK Dons 1-0 last night. Anthony Gerrard’s 40th minute header was enough to take all three points from what Wellens believes was a tough game on a difficult surface.

“We played to the conditions,” Wellens said.

“People keep saying to me that the result was the most important thing and the players applied themselves and their attitude was spot on.

“Fair play to them, they want to play expansive, good football but I thought in terms of the conditions both sets of players applied themselves really well but I thought we caused the problems a little bit more than they did.

“I’m buzzing with the result but it’s not nice to sit there and watch because you’re telling players to do stuff that you don’t want them to do, but it’s right for the situation.

“We’ve won the last two home games and that has put us in a better position that what we were.”

The three points has moved Wellens’ side out of the relegation zone and into 19th place in Sky Bet League One. However, Wellens is adamant that there’s still a lot of work to do to achieve survival.

“If we’re six or seven points clear with a couple of games to go then I’ll be happy,” said the manager.

“In this league at the moment the bottom 10 teams are going in cycles. Teams go on a good run and get sucked back into it.

“We need to concentrate on ourselves and we need more wins to keep climbing the table. Tonight was the first step towards that.”

Following the match against Rochdale being postponed due to the FA Cup, Latics’ next game is in nine days time at home to Southend United on Saturday, February 24.
