Oxford United have interviewed former Rotherham manager Alan Stubbs as they look for a replacement for Pep Clotet, according to journalist Alan Nixon.
The former England international Alan Stubbs has expressed his interest in getting back into management and he may be given a chance to manage Oxford United after they sacked Pep Clotet. Clotet failed to win nine of his last 13 league games in charge of the U’s, including a 7-0 loss at home to Wigan in December.
Clotet led Oxford to the quarter-finals of the Checkatrade Trophy and has left them 10th in League One, eight points behind the play-off places. His assistant Derek Fazackerley has been in charge of first-team affairs until a successor is appointed.
Alan Stubbs guided Hibs to second place in the 2014–15 Scottish Championship, securing the position above Rangers on the last day of the season. Stubbs also guided Hibernian to a semi-final place in the 2014–15 Scottish Cup, where they lost 1-0 against Falkirk. Under his guidance, Hibernian finally lifted their Scottish Cup winning the trophy for the 2015-16 season, for the first time in 114 years.
Following this, Stubbs was appointed manager of Championship club Rotherham United on 1 June 2016. Under Stubbs’ tenure, Rotherham lost ten of their first fourteen games, winning just once. They also conceded 37 goals during this period, leaving them with the worst goal difference in the entire Football League.
Craig Bellamy has been linked with the vacant manager jobs at Oxford United, the Cardiff City youth guru is seemingly stepping up his quest to delve into first team management and is the 8/13 favourite with bookmakers to succeed former Swansea City assistant Pep Clotet at Oxford.
Everton Under-23 coach Unsworth is also one of a number of people spoken to about the vacancy, following Pep Clotet’s sacking. But 44-year-old Unsworth has told BBC Radio Oxford he will not be taking the job at the Kassam Stadium. Derek Fazackerley remains in caretaker charge of the team and owner Daryl Eales has said there is “no rush”.
