Leeds United midfielder opens up over Christiansen – hints at some sort of clash

Mateusz Klich was one of the first transfer signings made by Leeds United during the summer 2017 transfer window, coming in from the Dutch Eredivisie and FC Twente.

Klich came from a six goal/four assist season in the Dutch top division, costing Leeds a sum thought to be in the region of £1.5 million. His time at Leeds has largely been limited to Carabao Cup appearances (four appearances/358 minutes) and with only five Sky Bet Championship appearances totalling 135 minutes adding to the sum total of his Leeds United time.

This lack of game time was explained by Klich in an interview carried by Dutch publication destenor.nl. In this interview Klich is very plain about where the problem lay, and it wasn’t with him. In answering a question about his lack of game time at Elland Road, Klich says, “I did not have a good relationship with the coach,” before going on to say, “What has happened between us? I do not want to go in to details too much.”

Without saying too much, what Klich does seem to hint at with the response, “What has happened between us? I do not want to go into details too much.” is that there has obviously been something that has occurred which soured the relationship between Klich and Thomas Christiansen.

Klich has been on loan at FC Utrecht since January this year, the relationship between himself and Christiansen, at the time, obviously playing a part in this move. With Christiansen gone from Elland Road after the Cardiff City debacle, this could open up a new opportunity under current head coach Paul Heckingbottom.

This is something that Klich is aware of, saying: “I love to play football and I’m here to play a lot of matches again. That is also necessary, because I will probably return to Leeds United in the summer, where my contract runs until 2020.”

The 10-cap Poland international wasn’t really given a chance at Elland Road under Thomas Christiansen although he says that he is more frustrated as he thinks that he can handle the level of competition that the Sky Bet Championship provides.
