Chris Powell makes history at Southend United

Chris Powell has become the first ever Southend United manager to win his first three games in charge after beating promotion chasing Wigan Athletic.

Southend’s new boss Chris Powell has revived The Shrimpers season after becoming the first ever Southend United manager to win his first three games in charge, beating Scunthorpe, Peterborough and Wigan. Seven defeats in eight matches left The Shrimpers just two points above the relegation zone in League One before the appointment of Powell, who has guided them nine points adrift of the relegation zone.

Chris Powell told the club website about his sides tough run of games “Once I accepted the job, I quickly realised Scunthorpe at home, Peterborough away and Wigan at home would be a very, very tough run of games, but the players have responded.”

“The players are working hard to stay in the position of being in front in games and any setbacks we’ve had, we’ve just dusted ourselves down and got on with it.”

At the start of February, Chris Powell confirmed the appointment of Kevin Keen and Damian Matthew as his Assistant Managers at Blues. The Gaffer has also confirmed that Roger Cross will take up the role of Head of Recruitment.

Powell made three signings in the January transfer window, Crystal Palace striker Freddie Ladapo joint on a six-month contract, while Powell agreed loan deals for Tottenham striker Shayon Harrison and Scunthorpe midfielder Sam Mantom.

Goalscorer of Southend United’s third of Saturday’s 3-1 win over Wigan Athletic, Michael Kightly, says the team are bursting with confidence at the moment “We’ve got a bit of confidence about us at the minute,” he said.

“We’ve got some good players in our team but we’re showing we can do the ugly side to the game and that’s what we’ve been doing. We’re an honest group and we’ve built on the first result [vs Scunthorpe] under the new Manager.”
