League Two round-up: Saturday 27th January

This Saturday we saw eight League Two games played which included a dramatic comeback at the County Ground and another win for high flyers Luton Town. Let’s see what happened this week in League Two.

Carlisle 1-0 Forest Green Rovers

Struggling Forest Green were looking to get themselves out of the bottom two with a win against an inconsistent Carlisle side at Brunton Park. In a pretty drab game, the only thing which separated the two sides was a James Devitt strike which gave the hosts all three points. The away side had a penalty shout controversially turned down when Christian Doidge went down after a challenge from Parkes. After the match, Rovers manager Mark Cooper said that it was ” A clear penalty.” It was only two weeks ago that Cooper accused Doidge of diving against Swindon where they also lost 1-0.

Cheltenham 1-1 Barnet

Barnet haven’t won away in over two months, but they took an early lead away at Cheltenham as defender Ricardo Santos scored from a corner. Coulthirst could’ve put Barnet 2-0 up, but his shot was kept out by Flinders. Mohamed Eisa restored parity with a close-range finish in the 65th minute however it ended all square as Cheltenham couldn’t find a winner. The draw still sees Barnet bottom of the Football League, and four points away from 23rd placed Forest Green.

Chesterfield 0-1 Stevenage

Struggling Chesterfield were looking to make it three wins on the trot, after wins against Luton and Yeovil, but Stevenage managed to edge out the tight affair. The first-half proved to be a half with few chances. The closest any side came to a goal in the first-half was when Danny Newton’s header ricocheted off the post. The only goal which separated the two sides came from a goalkeeping error. Chesterfield keeper Ramsdale made a hash of his clearance, and Ben Kenedy slotted home to give Boro a rare away win.

Crawley Town 2-1 Accrington

If there’s a team you don’t want to face at the moment, it’s Crawley Town. Fresh from their 2-1 away win at high flyers Notts County, The Red Devils were looking to make it five wins from six. Enzio Boldewijn gave Harry Kewell’s side the lead after 15 minutes, and he helped double his side’s advantage eighteen minutes later as his cross was converted by Mark Randall. A bizarre own-goal by Jimmy Smith gave Stanley hope, but Crawley successfully made it five wins from six.

Grimsby 0-1 Luton

High flying Luton travelled to Grimsby to try and go nine points clear at the top, with promotion rivals Notts County in FA Cup action. However, it was the hosts who started the better. Luke Summerfield saw his effort cannon off the bar while Matt also had the chance to put Grimsby one nil up. Luton looked to be in trouble when Jordan Cook got sent off for his second bookable offence, but James Collins scored his 12th goal of the season to give The Hatters all three points.

Morecambe 1-2 Mansfield

Mansfield were looking to strengthen their promotion credentials with a win against Morecambe. However, it was Morecambe who took the lead against The Stags. Callum Lang rounded Logan and slotted the ball into an empty net to give the hosts a 1-0 lead heading into half-time. Whatever was said by Steve Evans at half-time worked as Mansfield came out and improved in the second-half. After a lot of pressure, Mansfield finally equalised as The Stags top goalscorer Danny Rose scored from eight yards. Mansfield had to wait until the 90th minute for their winner. MacDonald’s cross was headed out only as far as Mal Benning who fired home to give Steve Evans side three valuable points.

Port Vale 2-2 Colchester

Two sides who haven’t yet won in 2018 faced off against each other at Vale Park. Courtney Senior put the Essex side 1-0 up after twelve minutes, but they were pegged back when David Worrall scored just after the half-hour mark. Colchester went into the break ahead thanks to Drey Wright who scored from a Sam Szmodics pass. It was looking like Colchester would come away with their first win of 2018, but David Worrall scored again in the 87th minute to earn a draw for Vale.

Swindon 4-3 Crewe

Swindon were looking to return to winning ways against a struggling Crewe side, and things were going to plan when Marc Richards scored from an Iandolo cross within the opening three minutes. Kaiyne Woolery almost put Town two ahead, but Dave Richards was equal his shot. Crewe equalised when Callum Ainley scored with the outside of his boot following some poor Swindon defending. It was Ainley again who put Crewe 2-1 up as the County Ground started to turn toxic.

Wintle made it 3-1 from close range, and it was looking like Swindon were down and out. However, Derby loanee Timi Max Elsnik scored a volley from the edge of the box to give Town hope. He scored again with ten minutes left. Elsnik converted Kellan Gordan’s cross to make it all to play for in the last ten minutes. With Crewe down to ten men after Bakayogo was sent off for a second yellow, Swindon were searching for the goal to complete the comeback. Veteran striker Marc Richards scored with a neat finish with three minutes remaining to give Swindon a 4-3 win.
