Leeds United and Sunderland in swap talks – could it be this ‘mystery’ player

According to former SkySports reporter Pete O’Rourke on Twitter this morning, Sunderland were eyeing up Leeds stopper Andy Lonergan with Leeds proposing a swap deal.

Lonergan started the season as second choice behind German Felix Wiedwald, replacing the former Werder Bremen stopper when his form dipped. A series of howlers by the former Wolves man saw Wiedwald reclaim his place in the side, relegating Lonergan back to the bench.

O’Rourke wrote in a Football Insider article that Sunderland are thought “keen to sign experienced custodian Lonergan to solve their problematic goalkeeping position“, with Leeds putting forward a definite interest in “a Black Cats star.”

Now football fans love a mystery just like anyone does, so as soon as this ‘mic drop’ moment was announced, it didn’t take Leeds United fans long to begin to try figure out who it might be.

Then this popped up.

What this essentially translates as is that Jack Rodwell’s trial at Vitesse Arnhem had been cancelled due to “organisational reasons.” Suddenly Leeds fans’ interest was jumping like a man stranded walking over hot coals. Is it…no surely not…it might…no…But the fact that “organisational reasons” saw Rodwell unable to complete his trial in Holland, now that lends a bit of wood to the fire of burning intrigue.

Suddenly Leeds United fan tact is changed.

Mind you, Sunderland fans are also hoping it is Jack Rodwell.

Seems even Sunderland fans want rid of the ex-Manchester City player as well.

Whatever the light coming out of the other side of this, whatever decisions (if any) are made as to Lonergan to Sunderland and Mr Mysterioso to Leeds United, there’s likely to be some movement/clarification on this before 11pm January 31st…hopefully.
