Aston Villa came close to signing former Manchester United star

Sky Bet Championship side Aston Villa came close to signing former Manchester United and Arsenal star Robin van Persie, according to the Birmingham Mail.

The former Premier League golden boot winner has been with Turkish side Fenerbahce since leaving Old Trafford in 2015 and secured a return to his home country Holland with first club Feyenoord yesterday.

However Villa boss Steve Bruce conceded that the Villains pulled out from signing the Dutch international due to his worries about the average age of his promotion chasers.

“He was wanting to come out of Turkey and we looked at it long and hard,” Bruce said. “It’s not often you get the availability of somebody like Robin van Persie.

“At the moment, with what we’ve got in that position and the amount of 30-year-olds we’ve got I just decided that it’s better we look elsewhere. I wish him the best of luck. It was an interesting couple of days!”

Meanwhile Villains Chief Executive Keith Wyness also confirmed that the Sky Bet Championship side had been looking at van Persie.

“We’ve been looking at big names. We looked at Robin Van Persie. Players of that sort of ilk.

“We looked at him, but decided he wasn’t the right type of player.

“It’s that sort of level – we’ve been scouring Europe, everywhere, for players that can actually make a difference.

“At this stage we’re not sure there’s anything available that’s better than what we have.”

The Villains still hope to sign another striker this month to add competition up-front for the rest of the season. Leicester City striker Leonardo Ulloa sits atop Villa’s wanted-list but Villa chiefs are expecting that deal to go down to the wire.
