Forest Green Rovers defy lowly league position to beat Cambridge 5-2

The disparity in the recent league form between Forest Green Rovers and Cambridge United was emulated in their respective league positions.  So if the script was set for a one-sided affair at New Lawn Stadium yesterday, it was truly turned on its head in a pulsating home win.

21-year-old Tahvon Campbell joined Forest Green on loan from West Bromwich Albion last week.  Whilst the forward had to wait until the 84th minute to make his début for the side, it only took him six minutes to score his first goal for the club.  And it was the final one in a 5-2 victory for Mark Cooper’s side.

Cooper was happy despite a poor start saw his team concede within three minutes of kick off when George Maris opened the scoring for the visitors.

By half-time it was 2-2.  Three goals from Dayle Grubb, Christopher Doidge and Campbell in the latter stages ensured a welcome win for Forest Green.  Leaving their manager content with a win that sees Forest Green one point from safety.

“I thought we played well for the whole game.

“Obviously, with the position we’re in, every time the ball goes in your box you become a little bit anxious and apprehensive.

“We had four entries into our box in the first half and they scored two goals which we need to address but that comes from the situation we’re in.

“Apart from that, in terms of general play, we played really well.

“Ten minutes after half time they had a really good spell and we changed to a diamond in midfield to match them up and from there on we were very, very good.”

Two huge games are on the horizon for Forest Green, in a period that could prove of crucial importance with regards to league survival.

Carlisle United await at Brunton Park next Saturday, followed by a trip to Exeter City four days later.

Saturday’s win gives the side momentum and belief heading into two tough away games.
