Middlesbrough battling SPL giants for midfielder signing

According to online betting site BetVictor, Sky Bet Championship side Middlesbrough are joint-favourites with SPL giants Celtic and Rangers to land Hibernian midfielder John McGinn.

Middlesbrough are said to be in the process of restructuring under new boss Tony Pulis, with midfielder Adam Forshaw having left the Teessiders and headed to fellow Championship side Leeds United earlier this week. That departure would leave something of a gap to fill and it seems that BetVictor think that there is a chance that McGinn could be the man to fill it.

Boro are rated at the same 4/1 odds to capture the much thought of young Scot as Old Firm duo Celtic and Rangers, indicating that whilst there is interest there it is hard to see a clear favourite emerging at the moment. This trio of 4/1 shots lead the field from sides like West Ham (6/1) and Hull City (14/1).

McGinn has been at Easter Road and Hibernian since signing from fellow Scottish side St Mirren at the end of July 2015 – the youngster coming up through the ranks at The Buddies. Since that move, McGinn has featured in 117 games for Hibernian – scoring 13 goals and providing 24 assists.

This season the young midfielder has featured 21 Premiership games, scoring three goals and providing three assists. Two of those three goals were in the 2-2 draw against Celtic. On the down side, his combative style has led to him picking up nine yellow cards already for the season.

Middlesbrough sit knocking on the door of the play-off picture in the Championship in ninth place on 41 points, only two points shy of Sheffield United in sixth place in the table.
