Former England manager, not Steve McClaren, applies for Sheffield Wednesday job

Sven Goran Eriksson has applied for the Sheffield Wednesday job according to a report on Page 63 of the January 5th print edition of The Mirror.

The Owls are currently without a manager after the departure of Carlos Carvalhal on Christmas Eve and have since been linked with a lot of men for the job. Some have been expected like former Wolves manager Paul Lambert while they have also had some unexpected men being linked with the role such as Shaktar Donetsk manager Paulo Foncesca and more recently ex-Hertha Berlin head coach Jos Luhukay.

And while Wednesday have already been linked with one England manager with Steve McClaren once being touted for the role, his predecessor is also said to be interesting in taking the job. This report suggests that Eriksson has applied for the job and is looking to be Wednesday’s next manager. This would certainly fit in with a report from yesterday which revealed the South Yorkshire club and received applications from across the world for the job. This report goes onto say that Wednesday owner Dejphon Chansiri is interesting in appointing a big name, meaning this appointment may be more likely than expected

Ericsson is most famous in this country for his stint with England where he led them to three consecutive quarter-finals in a row, something which in hindsight seems more impressive considering recent performances from the national side. But he has also managed plenty of clubs at club level including Manchester City and Leicester City in England as well as teams such as Sampdoria and IFK Goteborg. Most recently he was in China where he was sacked as Shenzhen FC manager following a nine game run without a win.
