Gloucestershire Live understands that Sky Bet Championship promotion hopefuls Cardiff City are set to make a move for Forest Green Rovers striker Christian Doidge. The 25-year-old has netted 12 of the 25 league goals scored by the League Two strugglers.
The number nine forward unsurprisingly is now the subject of interest from clubs at a higher level, with Neil Warnock keen on adding to his injury hit squad to maintain their push to return to the Premier League. Doidge has played his football at The New Lawn since 2016, helping the club achieve their first ever promotion into the EFL via the National League Play-offs.
Whilst there are many clubs said to be in the race for the former Dagenham & Redbridge frontman, the Bluebirds are supposedly leading the chase. The Nailsworth-based side are possibly bracing themselves to lose their prized asset given the interest in him. He is irreplaceable in the eyes of Mark Cooper, but he himself will perhaps be understanding should the player indeed wish to move on and test himself in the second-tier of English football.
Focusing on Cardiff, Warnock has said that he hopes to be busy in January in terms of adding to his extremely thin squad at present. He recently stated that injuries mean he may find it hard to fill up the bench for this weekend’s FA Cup tie at home to Mansfield Town.
At the Cardiff City Stadium, there is a plethora of injury problems at present, especially in attack. Danny Ward and Frederic Gounongbe are out long-term, whilst Kenneth Zohore has only just returned from a serious problem, the same as youngster Rhys Healey. Omar Bogle has been signed, but has found himself in and out of the squad due to injury issues as well. Anthony Pilkington has gone up the pecking order as a result, but he was out of favour earlier in the campaign. The addition of Doidge would certainly be most welcome by the Welsh-club.
