Sunderland want move for former Swansea City, Sheffield United and Birmingham winger

Sunderland are interested in a move for David Cotterill, according to the Sunderland Echo.

The 30 year-old winger was recently released by fellow Championship strugglers Birmingham City by mutual consent. He was told that he was not part of Blues boss Steve Cotterill’s plans.

Cotterill now finds himself looking for a new club this January and there will no doubt be a lot of clubs pondering whether to move for him. He is an experienced Championship winger and he will have his options open.

Sunderland are the ones who are being linked with him. Their manager, Chris Coleman, knows Cotterill well from managing him for Wales. He may be set to hand his old player a helping hand by gifting him an immediate return to football.

Cotterill’s career with Birmingham had been petering out for a while. He spent the latter part of last season on loan at Bristol City and was expected to leave in the summer. However, he remained at St. Andrews but his chances were limited.

Cotterill has been somewhat of a Football League journeyman and has played for a variety of different clubs. He started his career with Bristol City before spells at Wigan Athletic, Sheffield United and Swansea City. He then moved to Barnsley in 2012 before joining their Yorkshire rivals Doncaster Rovers a year later.

He then joined Birmingham in 2014 and went onto play over 100 games for the Blues. Cotterill would be a good signing for Sunderland, especially on a free transfer, as he would give them another option in midfield.
