PREVIEW: Lincoln visit Luton in top of the table clash

Lincoln City travel to SkyBet League Two leaders Luton Town in an attempt to close the gap at the top of the table.

Free-scoring Luton sit top of the tree and are four points ahead of 2nd placed Notts County and eight points ahead of opponents Lincoln.

Lincoln’s victory on Saturday ensured they beat off competition to remain in 3rd place but only sit there a point ahead of Exeter City.

Luton will be looking for a response after they crumbled against lowly Port Vale at Vale Park on Saturday. The Hatters were fortunate for Notts County to lose, ensuring that they remained four points ahead of the Pies.

A brace from Valiant talisman Tom Pope plus goals from Ben Whitfield and an own goal from Dan Potts saw Luton suffer their biggest defeat of the season.

The performance was a stark contrast to Boxing Day as they thumped Swindon Town 5-0 at the County Ground. Town boss Nathan Jones will be looking for his side to put it right against high flying Lincoln on New Years Day.

The Imps however come into the game having beaten Forest Green Rovers in their fifth straight home win in SkyBet League Two.

A brace from their own talisman Matt Rhead either side of Rovers top scorer Christian Doidge was enough for Danny Cowley’s side to remain in the automatic promotion spots ahead of Paul Tisdale’s Exeter.

The two sides met earlier in the season at Sincil Bank in an end to end 0-0. The visitors ground out an impressive point with Cowley’s side putting the Hatters under constant pressure.

It was the league’s top scorer Danny Hylton that had the best chance of the game but he was unable to connect cleanly to a firmly driven cross from the left.
