Match report: Lincoln record yet another 2-0 victory

Lincoln City made it back-to-back 2-0 victories after comfortably dispatching of Accrington Stanley.

Goals either side of half-time from Matt Green and Matt Rhead ensured the Imps second victory of the season against Stanley.

Lincoln went closest to breaking the deadlock in the first half an hour after Stanley goalkeeper Aaron Chapman unable to hold a Sam Habergham free-kick. The loose ball fell to City winger Harry Anderson, who’s looping volley went over Chapman but Mark Hughes was able to clear the ball off the line.

Stanley did create their own chance when Sean McConville who unleashed an effort from the edge of the box with Imps keeper Josh Vickers able to hold comfortably.

Imps striker Green would be next to test the away goalkeeper. Rhead’s precise through ball found Green who stabbed the ball towards the corner however Chapman was very alert and was able to tip the ball around the post.

The game sparked into life in added time of the first half when Stanley defender Farrend Rawson pulled back Matt Green in the penalty and was shown a straight red card. Green got up and converted the penalty sending Chapman the wrong way – his 4th goal in as many games.

Lincoln centre half, Luke Waterfall, had to be alert to intercept a dangerous looking Accrington cross until the ball fell into the arms of Vickers.

The Imps would extend their lead just 12 minutes into the second half. Neal Eardley’s whipped cross found Matt Rhead in space in the area and the big number nine slotted past the keeper.

The win moves Lincoln a place into sixth after being overtaken by Colchester United last night who were able to pick up a 3-2 win away at Swindon Town.

Three league wins in a row ensures that Cowley’s men remain in the play-off picture whereas Stanley fall to fifth after Wycombe and Exeter were both able to claim home victories.

The Imps travel to south Wales next Saturday to take on play-off chasing Newport County whereas Coleman’s Stanley return home with a tie with relegation threatened Crawley Town.
