Sunderland want deal for Derby County midfielder

Championship strugglers Sunderland are interested in signing midfielder Joe Ledley, as per a report by HITC Sport.

The Welsh midfielder is currently playing for Derby County but his contract expires in January. The Rams are trying to tie him down on a longer contract but now will have to compete with Sunderland.

Chris Coleman, who recently left his job as the manager of Wales to take charge of Sunderland, knows Joe Ledley very well from managing him for Wales. Could he use his good relationship with him to bring him to the Stadium of Light?

Ledley, 30, left Premier League side Crystal Palace in the summer and did not have a club until September when Derby snapped him up. He had previously turned down offers from teams in Turkey, Spain and China over the summer.

Ledley started his career with Cardiff City ad played over 250 games for the Bluebirds. He moved to Celtic in 2010 and played 157 matches for the Scottish Champions before moving to Premier League side Crystal Palace in 2014.

He is an experienced player and would be a great signing for Sunderland if they can beat Derby to signing him on a longer contract. Sunderland boss Chris Coleman will be looking for a number of fresh faces in January as he looks to improve the North East club’s form.

Sunderland are currently bottom of the Championship and are, at the moment, in danger of another relegation to League One. Coleman has a tough job on his hands and will be hoping to use his contacts from Wales to bring some signings in.
