Derby County and Norwich City weigh up January move for Wigan Athletic star

Championship duo Derby County and Norwich City are both interested in Wigan Athletic midfielder Sam Morsy, according to the Daily Mail.

Morsy is the captain of League One side Wigan and has been attracting attention from Championship clubs. He has also helped Egypt qualify for the World Cup and will be hoping for a place in their squad for Russia.

Wigan fans will be hoping they can see off interest from Derby and Norwich as they look to bounce back from relegation last season with an immediate return to the second tier under new boss Paul Cook.

Morsy, 26, was born in Wolverhampton but represents Egypt as his father is Egyptian. He played for the Wolves academy as a youngster but he was released when he was 16 so he joined Port Vale. He made his debut in 2009 and made over 70 appearances for Port Vale before joining Chesterfield in 2013.

Morsy helped Chesterfield gain promotion to League One in his first season and went onto play for them in League One for two seasons before he signed for Wigan Athletic in January 2016. He was part of the Latics squad who won the League One title but he was loaned out to Barnsley in the August.

Since returning from his loan from Barnsley in January he has been a key player for Wigan. There is no surprise that Championship clubs like Derby and Norwich are keeping tabs on him. With a potential trip to Russia on the cards for Morsy, he may well be tempted by a move back to the Championship.
