Carlos Carvahal still believes Sheffield Wednesday will be promoted to the Premier League this season

Carlos Carvahal still believes that his Sheffield Wednesday side can gain promotion to the Premier League this season, as per a report by the Yorkshire Post.

The Owls have made a slow start to the season but Carvahal said “I still believe we can get promoted” after their 2-0 defeat to Derby County on Saturday. Carvahal has been under intense pressure this season with the Wednesday fans wanting more from their side.

Sheffield Wednesday are 16th in the Championship with four wins from thirteen games. They are six points off the Play-Offs. Carvahal believes that after a tough start “You come back more strong and focused and I believe our team will provide a reaction and be in a higher position at the end”.

The Portuguese manager has guided the Owls to the Championship Play-Offs for the past two seasons. In 2016 they beat Brighton and Hove Albion in the Play-Offs so reach the final against Hull City. However, a goal from Mohamed Diame was enough to seal promotion for the Tigers. Last season the Owls reached the Play-Offs again but narrowly lost on penalties to Huddersfield Town in the second leg at Hillsborough.

The fans sing “we’re on our way back” and Carlos Carvahal still believes that. This is a bold statement by a man under pressure but you never know in the Championship. They are only six points off the Play-Offs so a couple of positive results in their next few matches could catapult them up the table.
