Wales international to join Scunthorpe United on a free transfer

League One side Scunthorpe United are set to sign striker Simon Church on a free transfer, according to The Sun journalist Alan Nixon.

Plymouth Argyle were also apparently interested in the 28 year-old but it is Scunthorpe who look set to sign him. He has been without a club since leaving Eredivisie side Roda JC in the summer.

Scunthorpe have started the season slowly and are 12th in League One. They were hoping to be competing at the top end of the table this season after making the Play-Offs last term. They have had a lack of firepower up front but hope the possible signing of Simon Church can help them.

Church has made 38 appearances for Wales. He joined the Reading academy at the age of 14 having previously been with Wycombe Wanderers. He played over 100 games for the Royals, scoring 22 goals. He had loan spells at Crewe Alexandra, Wycombe, Leyton Orient, Yeovil Town and Huddersfield Town before leaving the Madejski Stadium on a permanent basis in 2013 to join Charlton Athletic.

He played for Charlton for 2 seasons but only managed to score 5 goals during his time with the Addicks. A move to MK Dons followed whilst they were still in the Championship but he left in the January to join Scottish side Aberdeen on loan.

Church shocked many when he joined Roda JC in August 2016. His move to Holland did not work out but he will be hoping he can get his career back on track in England with a move to Scunthorpe.
