Thomas Christiansen backs Felix Wieldwald after poor performance against Sheffield Wednesday

Leeds United head coach Thomas Christiansen has told the Yorkshire Evening Post that he backs Felix Wiedwald to be his number one amid calls for him to be dropped.

Just before the international break, Wiedwald had one of his worst performances for the club since signing for them in the summer. Many fans criticised him for ‘lacking conviction’ in their embarrassing 3-0 defeat to Yorkshire rivals Sheffield Wednesday and some even called for him to be dropped from the first team for Saturday’s match against Reading.

However Christiansen has said that Wiedwald will be staying as the club’s number one despite that performance, believing that his showings at the start of the season when Leeds picked up several clean sheets in a row show that he is well suited to the role. However he did say that many of the players he signed this summer still have to settle in and Wiedwald may just need to have a bit more time.

He said: “I have confidence in all my goalkeepers. They are working well and I’m not one to criticise in public. If I have something to say I will say it to the player straight.

“Everyone has to settle in. I have to settle in still. We’ve only played a few games in this league and he’s not the only one, there are many others.”

“We work together and when we win, we win all together. We also have to remember that he’s got six clean sheets behind him. If he was so bad, he couldn’t have done that before.”
