Aston Villa star leaves on permanent deal

Aston Villa left-back Jordan Amavi has joined Ligue 1 side Marseille on a permanent deal after triggering a clause in his loan deal that meant he could return to France permanently, according to L’Equipe.

Amavi had been on loan in south of France after Villa failed to secure an immediate return to the Premier League last season. The 23-year-old was also in talks with Sevilla during the summer and, at one point, looked set for a move to Spain but talks stalled and Marseille made their move.

Marseille will pay a fee of €10m (£9m) to Villa after Amavi played his fifth league game for the club, triggering a clause for him to return to his home country beyond the end of the season. L’Equipe understand that Amavi has signed a four-year deal, capping off a good week for him having been called up to France’s senior squad for crucial World Cup qualifiers against Bulgaria and Belarus.

The deal has very little impact to Steve Bruce and his side, as they would have been without Amavi anyway, until at least January, when the funds recuperated from the deal could be reinvested in boosting their promotion hopes after a dramatic turn in form in recent weeks.

Villa are unbeaten in their last eight Championship games, winning five in the process (including their last four), and find themselves in seventh place – five points away from the top of the table and one point outside of the play-offs.
