MATCH REPORT: Sheffield United 2-0 Wolverhampton Wanderers

Tonight Sheffield United beat 10 man Wolves 2-0 at Bramall Lane to take the Blades up to 2nd in the Sky Bet Championship. But how did the goals come about?

Just 15 minutes in Conor Coady was given his marching orders as he was adjudged to have dragged back the Sheffield United striker Leon Clarke who was breaking through the defence and onto goal. As a response to the red card attacking winger Helder Costa was replaced by defensive midfielder Romain Saiss but, as the scoreline suggests, it didn’t really work.

In the 39th minute, Enda Stevens blasted in a low cross across the face of goal which was met the foot of Leon Clarke as he slid in at the back post to put United into the lead. The first half ended with the Blades 1-0 up and very much in the driving seat.

In the 50th minute, Diogo Jota was allegedly pulled down in the box as he tried to create some space for himself. The referee awarded the penalty but Ruben Neves didn’t even hit the target from 12 yards as he saw his spot-kick crash against the outside of the post and fly wide.

Just 5 minutes later Sheffield United doubled their lead as Leon Clarke got his second. The striker rose highest to nod home from a free kick which all but sealed the three points for the South Yorkshire club.

The match ended 2-0 which saw Sheffield United leapfrog Ipswich Town, Preston, Wolves and Leeds United to go into 2nd place which is absolutely incredible given they’ve only just come up from League One following a six-year absence. Sheffield United really are a club to keep half an eye on this season.
