Promising Leeds United defender pens new contract

Leeds United defender Conor Shaughnessy has committed his long term future to the Championship club after penning a new four year contract, according to the official club website.

The newly signed deal will keep Conor Shaughnessy at the Elland Road club until 2021. The 21 year-old joined the Whites Academy in September last year. He had previously been at the Reading academy but never made a senior appearance for the Royals.

After impressing at U23 level for Leeds he made the step up to training with the first team this summer and made his debut for The Whites on the opening day win at Bolton as a substitute for the injured Matthew Pennington in the 66th minute and he has gone on to feature 5 times already during the 2017/18 campaign. His first start came against Fulham at Elland Road on 15th August, where he partnered Pontus Jansson in the centre of defence.

The youngster as born in Galway in Ireland. He has featured for the Republic of Ireland at U15, U16, U17 and U18 level. He has also recently been called up to the Republic of Ireland U21 squad for the first time. He can operate as either a defender or a central midfielder.

Connor Shaughnessy becomes the latest member of Thomas Christiansen’s squad to sign a new deal this year following Ronaldo Vieira, Gaetano Berardi, Liam Cooper, Eunan O’Kane, Stuart Dallas and Kalvin Phillips. It seems that Leeds are continuing to plan for the future and new contracts may follow for others too.
