Championship side Sunderland are looking at bringing Blackburn’s Charlie Mulgrew to the Stadium of Light in January, according to the Sun journalist Alan Nixon.
Sunderland boss Simon Grayson is believed to be a big fan of the Scotland international. The Black Cats have endured a difficult start to life in the Championship after relegation from the Premier League last season. They were restricted financially in the summer and did not spend much money in comparison to other Championship rivals.
It is thought that Mulgrew is available for a relatively low price. A number of clubs were linked with him in the summer, including Middlesbrough and Sheffield Wednesday, but he remained at Blackburn Rovers. He was part of the Rovers side who were relegated to League One last season.
Mulgrew, 31, is a versatile player who can play in defence and in midfield. He started his career with Celtic but moved to Wolves in 2006. He game time was restricted at Wolves and he went on loan to Southend, before moving back up to Scotland with Aberdeen in 2008. Mulgrew impressed in the SPL for Aberdeen, scoring 10 goals in 2 seasons. He re-joined Celtic in 2010 and went onto play 130 games for his home-town club, scoring 20 goals in 6 years.
He then made the move back down to England with Blackburn last summer on a free transfer. Despite being relegated, Mulgrew was impressive for Rovers meaning he would be a good fit for Sunderland, who lie 21st in the Championship and could benefit from his experience.
