Burton Albion announce new captain

Burton Albion have today announced on their club website that Shaun Barker will be the Brewers’ new captain.

This news comes after former skipper John Mousinho moved to League One outfit Oxford United on transfer deadline day.

Burton boss Nigel Clough has therefore needed to name a new captain, and has appointed the 34-year-old centre-back to the role.

However, Clough has confirmed that he may well need to appoint an on-pitch captain, due to the fact that Barker rarely starts for the Brewers:

Clough stated:

“Shaun won’t be starting too many games so he will have the club captain role and we will see about the captain on the pitch in the next few days.

“Shaun is an influential figure in the dressing room and he’s perfect for that role.”

Barker arrived at the Pirelli Stadium in August 2016, making his debut the very day that he signed for Burton, incidentally coming on as a last-minute substitute against his former employers Derby County. Incredibly, it was his first competitive game in over four years, with injuries sadly taking their toll during his six-year spell at Pride Park.

This is not the first time that Clough has named Barker as a club captain – the 51-year-old named the defender as Derby’s captain during his managerial stint with the Rams.

Burton Albion will hope that this decision will lead to a climb up the league table, with the Brewers currently sitting in 21st place, following an inconsistent start to their Championship season.

Their next match is a difficult trip to in-form Leeds United on Saturday.
