Port Vale watch former Manchester United winger

League Two side Port Vale had a look at winger Cameron Stewart in their reserves match against Walsall this afternoon, according to the Stoke Sentinel.

The former Manchester United winger has been on trial with Port Vale for the past few weeks. He played on the wing as Port Vale beat Walsall 3-0 in their reserves match.

Stewart is a free agent after he left Championship side Ipswich Town at the end of last season. He started his career at Old Trafford and had a first taste of senior football on loan at Yeovil Town in 2010. He then joined Hull City on loan at the start of the 2010/11 season. The Tigers made the deal permanent in the January.

Stewart played 37 games for Hull, scoring 1 goal. He then had loan spells at Burnley, Charlton Athletic, Blackburn Rovers and Leeds United. He struggled to find a permanent home and could not establish himself in the Hull first team when they were promoted to the Premier League. He then left and joined Ipswich Town on a free transfer.

The 26 year-old could not find a regular first-team spot at Ipswich and had loans spells at Barnsley and then Doncaster last season. He is still yet to find a club having left Ipswich in the summer.

It is yet to be seen whether or not Port Vale will offer Stewart a contract. Clubs can still sign free agents even though the transfer window has shut. It will certainly be a judge of how much Cameron Stewart has impressed Port Vale boss Michael Brown in today’s game and during his trial.
