Derby County Transfer Review – every deal rated or slated

Derby County fans can look back upon their summer transfer business with a great deal of satisfaction. After initial concern following the departures of a couple of key figures to the Premier League, Rams boss Gary Rowett has to be commended for conducting a number of impressive deals before the conclusion of the transfer window on Thursday night. Here is every single Derby deal rated or slated…

IN

Curtis Davies (from Hull City, undisclosed fee)
The signing of the experienced defender will be a massive boost to Derby, with the 32-year-old arriving with 14 years of professional football under his belt. Despite not being given the captain’s armband, Davies has spoken about his desire to be a leader at Pride Park, where he arrived following Hull’s relegation from the Premier League. The centre-back will be a key asset for the Rams this campaign and many Tigers fans will have been frustrated to have seen him leave the KCOM Stadium.

Andre Wisdom (from Liverpool, £3 million)
Wisdom is no stranger to Derby fans – the right-back had an extremely successful loan spell with the Rams during the 2013-14 season, in which they reached the Play-Off Final. The 24-year-old was a key part of Steve McClaren’s side three years ago, and he will be hoping to play a similar role under Gary Rowett this campaign.

Tom Huddlestone (from Hull City, £2 million)
Pass-master Huddlestone is another former Ram – Tom came through Derby’s youth academy before leaving for Tottenham Hotspur, having made almost 100 appearances for County. The centre-midfielder, like Curtis Davies, arrives from Hull City, and should add steel and creativity into Rowett’s midfield, despite lacking pace. Derby fans were delighted to hear of his return to Pride Park, with many still reeling over his move to Spurs back in 2005.

Tom Lawrence (from Leicester City, £7 million)
Lawrence, a long-term target of Rowett’s, signs from Leicester City following an impressive season on loan at Ipswich Town last year. The 23-year-old hit double figures in goals and assists for the Tractor Boys, and Rams fans will be desperate for the Welshman to hit those heights once more, having seen last season’s top-scorer Tom Ince depart for Huddersfield Town. This deal was a long-time in the making, with Lawrence now keen to help fire Derby into the Premier League.

Sam Winnall (from Sheffield Wednesday, season-long loan)
This deal came almost out of the blue towards the end of Deadline Day – as Winnall arrives at Derby from Sheffield Wednesday for the season, Rams midfielder Jacob Butterfield joins the Owls for the same period of time. It is hard for the Rams not to feel optimistic about this deal, as Winnall will aim to replicate his form at Barnsley, where he netted an impressive 40 goals in 95 games before joining Wednesday. With a consistently inconsistent Chris Martin, an ageing David Nugent and a perpetually offside/injured Darren Bent his competition at Derby, Winnall will be a fantastic addition to Gary Rowett’s squad.

Maikel Kieftenbeld (from Birmingham City, undisclosed fee)
Rams boss Rowett knows the Dutchman very well – the pair were at Birmingham City together. With the Rams short on options in the middle of the park following the loan departures of Craig Bryson and Jacob Butterfield, Kieftenbeld could prove to be an inspired signing. His work-rate, desire and determination will be crucial if Derby County are to have a successful season.
