Reading captain signs new deal

Reading FC have made it a brace of new deals today as central defender Paul McShane puts pen-to-paper on a contract extension that keeps him at the club until the summer of 2019, the club’s website has confirmed.

The club captain joins fellow defender Jordan Obita in signing a new contract at the Madjeski Stadium today.

Paul McShane signed for the Royals in 2015 on a free transfer from Hull City. His previous contract was set to expire at the end of this campaign. However, manager Jaap Stam was keen to tie down a new contract to keep him at the heart of his defence for an extra two years.

Stam said, “Macca entered the last year of his contract this season and it is important to ensure your experienced players remain part of your squad and help the club move forward.”

“His mentality was so important to the team as a whole, as was his role in helping us play the ball out from the back – and I’m very pleased he has agreed to remain a key part of this squad and what we want to achieve at Reading.”

‘Macca’ has plenty of experience in the top flight with clubs including West Bromwich Albion, Sunderland and Hull City. He came through the youth ranks at Manchester United, where he was very successful. It was there where he won the FA Youth Cup.

The 31-year-old, similarly to Obita, is coming towards a milestone for the Royals, as he his 4 starts away from making 75 starts for the club.
