Birmingham City push to sign Sheffield Wednesday playmaker

Sky Sports Assistant News Editor Lyall Thomas reports that Sky Bet Championship side Birmingham City have produced a bid for Sheffield Wednesday midfielder Barry Bannan. The Scottish international has recently attracted unsuccessful interest from Hull City, with the Owls not open to the prospect of selling the player.

The 27-year-old, who has been at Hillsborough since 2015, has played over 80 times for the club and has established himself as a key player under Carlos Carvalhal. It is therefore no surprise that Harry Redknapp would like to add Bannan to his squad before Thursday’s transfer deadline, but the Blues look to be fighting a lost cause.

Sky Sports reports that the player is not for sale. This means it would probably take ‘silly money’ for Sheff Wed to even consider a sale. Birmingham have certainly been busy in the transfer market recently, adding the likes of Carl Jenkinson, Cohen Bramall, Sam Gallagher and Jereie Boga on loan deals from Premier League clubs. Isaac Vassell from Luton Town earlier this month was the last permanent capture by the St Andrews club.

Sheff Wed have not signed too many players over the course of the summer and will certainly not be willing to let too many go, especially a key man such as Bannan. He has featured in every league game this season so far for the club, further highlighting his importance to the team. Carvalhal wants to build a squad capable of improving their play-off semi-final appearance of last season, so letting Bannan go would certainly not go down too well.
