Sunderland fans react to resounding loss vs Barnsley

Relegated from the Premier League, buoyed by the parachute payments, you’d expect a side like Sunderland to be right up there and knocking on the door of an instant return to the big league.

Yet as teams enter the first international break of the season, the Black Cats sit in a lowly 19th place on the back of two crushing defeats where they haven’t bothered the scoreboard. A 2-0 loss at home against Leeds United would have been bad enough to stomach, yet today they have lost 3-0 to unfancied Barnsley.

The writing began to be written on the wall when Barnsley sparked to life around the half-hour mark of the game. First blood was drawn by Ike Ugbo (31′) before Harvey Barnes (35′) made it 2-0 at the break for the Tykes.

The second 45 didn’t really get any better for the Wearsiders, with Barnsley doggedly refusing to lie down in the face of some Sunderland pressure. Just after the hour, George Moncur (67′) scored Barnsley’s third of the game and really did put the tie to bed.

Sunderland (59.5%) had more possession than home side Barnsley (40.5%), attempted more passes (460) at a higher accuracy (76%) than Barnsley (294 – 64%). But the only figure that matters is the scoreline – a scoreline that might add a sense of worry for Black Cats fans.

On the back of the display against Barnsley, Sunderland fans took to Twitter to voice their concerns – they were forthright in what they had to say.
