Samu Saiz stars as Leeds United comfortably beat Port Vale

Samu Saiz had a debut to remember after scoring a hat trick to help Leeds United beat Port Vale 4-1 in the First Round of the Carabao Cup.

Leeds had a great start to the season after beating Bolton Wanderers 3-2 in the opening day of the season and were hoping to carry on that form in this game. Port Vale also got off to a good start as they were able to beat Crawley Town 3-1.

Saiz was given a chance to stake a claim to start in the league in this match and he made sure that he would be the first name in Thomas Christiansen’s mind when picking the team for their next match. His first goal came when Stuart Dallas’ cross smashed off the post and Saiz was the first to react.

It did seem like the game was going to be tougher than first expected as Port Vale were up for the fight in the first half. Michael Tonge proved the curse of the former player was real as he got the equaliser when a long throw from Gavin Gunning caused trouble for the Leeds defence, and Tonge was able to pounce and hit it home to make it 1-1.

In the second half though, Saiz took control and made sure that Port Vale did not cause the upset they were hoping for. Saiz was able to give Leeds the lead when he rounded the goalkeeper to score and got his hat trick when with an impressive shot into the top corner. The fourth goal came when Caleb Ekuban converted a cross, another one of Leeds’ new signings showing that they will once again be a force to be reckoned with this season.

Saiz will hope this performance will be good enough to mean he’ll start in Saturday’s match against Preston North End. Port Vale will hope to get back on track when they face Wycombe Wanderers.
