Barnsley edge seven goal thriller with Morecambe thanks to last minute winner

Barnsley only just got into the Second Round of the Carabao Cup after scoring a last-minute winner in their 4-3 victory over Morecambe.

Even though Barnsley suffered a tough 3-1 opening day defeat to Bristol City at the weekend, they would have been hoping that considering the difference in leagues that they could claim a comfortable win over Morecambe to boost their confidence. Morecambe however got off to a good start by beating Cheltenham Town 2-1 on opening day and were hopeful of causing an upset.

However many Morecambe fans would have thought their trip to South Yorkshire was a waste of time after Barnsley got a very early goal. After just two minutes, some good play between George Moncur and Ike Ugbo allowed Tom Bradshaw the space to finish off and score the opening goal of the game. Ugbo was able to create another when his cross was deflected into the goal by Mitchell Lund, an embarrassing own goal for the defender.

Just before the end of the first half though, Morecambe showed they didn’t want to go out of the Carabao Cup with a whimper. The Shrimps had wasted a lot of corners throughout the first half but eventually they made one count when Sam Lavelle was able to hit one home just before the whistle blew to end the first 45 minutes.

In the second half though, Barnsley were able to score quicker than they were able to in the first. Bradshaw was able to get his second of the game, this time heading in from an Adam Hammill cross. But instead of putting Morecambe away like they would have hoped, it simply sparked them into life.

Just a few minutes after Bradshaw’s second, a Morecambe corner soon turned into a penalty when the referee believed that Joe Williams had fouled his man in the box. While Barnsley were angry at this penalty, it didn’t stop Michael Rose from scoring from the spot. The Lancashire club then made it 3-3 when just under ten minutes from full time when Vadaine Oliver was able to score from a very narrow angle.

Luckily for Barnsley, they managed to avoid extra time when Ryan Hedges was able to find some space before curling the ball into the bottom corner. This managed not only a tiring extra thirty minutes of play, but also a potentially embarrassing loss to a Sky Bet League Two team which would not have helped their confidence after their opening day defeat.

After this dramatic win, Barnsley will now turn their attentions to Saturday’s match with Ipswich Town. Morecambe will hope to use the confidence of scoring three goals against a Sky Bet Championship side to get a win over Lincoln City on Saturday.
