Sheffield Wednesday’s move for former Arsenal defender falls through

Sheffield Wednesday’s move to sign Johan Djourou has fallen through according to a report from the Sheffield Star.

The Owls have known since the end of last season when they went down to just two natural centre-backs after the release of Vincent Sasso that they need a new defender. After months of links to several different defenders, it seemed like they were close to getting their man. Djourou, who is a free agent after being released by German club Hamburg, had passed a medical on Friday night and appeared close to completing a deal during the weekend.

However as of now, the deal is off as talks between the club and player have broken down. It is unknown what the two clubs don’t agree on but it is enough to stop the deal progressing from now, though it isn’t completely dead at the moment. Wednesday still need a new defender and after a disappointing 1-0 loss to Preston North End, it is likely they will continue to pursue Djourou.

It is no wonder that Wednesday would want to continue their attempts to sign the 30-year-old defender considering the reputation he has. He came from the famed Arsenal academy and would be a regular for the Gunners as they regularly challenged for the Premier League title and played in the Champions League. He would eventually leave for Germany in 2014 and sign for Hamburg but was released this summer. And now his future is currently in doubt after this deal with Wednesday fell through.
