Leeds United look to solve centre-back problem – eyeing target

According to Swiss source RTS, Leeds United are making last-ditch attempts to alleviate their centre-back ‘problem’.

RTS say that he Whites, whose only ‘native’ centre-back at the moment is Scot Liam Cooper, are said to be taking a look at 31-year-old Swiss defender Reto Ziegler.

The Swiss publication say that free agent Ziegler, who was released at the end of his contract by FC Sion, has “had a touch with Leeds” – this seemingly indicating that there has been some manner of contact between the two parties.

Ziegler, who RTS say is “coveted” by Championship club Leeds has had a career in football that has seen him feature for some big clubs. His first big move, at the end of August 2004, saw him swap Swiss football with Grasshoppers for the English Premier League with Tottenham Hotspurs. He made 32 appearances (one goal/five assists) for Spurs during his near three years at the club – three years punctuated by loans to Wigan Athletic, SV Hamburg and Sampdoria.

It was the last of these loan moves that brought about a £1.7 million move, Ziegler leaving Spurs for Sampdoria at the opening of the summer 2007 transfer window. Centre-back Ziegler, who can also play across at left-back, made 155 appearances for Sampdoria (five goals/15 assists) before a free move to Juventus. From Juve a series of loans to Fenerbache, Lokomotiv Moscow and Sassulolo following – the defender never actually making an appearance for the Italian giants.

After signing as a free agent for FC Sion, following his release by Juve, Ziegler made 92 apearances for the Swiss Super League side, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists.

Leeds begin their 2017/18 Championship campaign on Sunday, and before the Sky Sports cameras, wit ha trip over the Pennines to the Macron Stadium to face newly promoted Bolton Wanderers.
